In 2026, Jesus would be roughly 2,029 to 2,031 years old, counting from his estimated birth. The surprise is in the calendar: he was probably born several years before AD 1.
A missing year zero, Luke's age clue, and Easter explain the answer.
On this page

| Estimated birth year | Approximate age in 2026 |
|---|---|
| 6 BC | 2,031 |
| 5 BC | 2,030 |
| 4 BC | 2,029 |
The calculation crosses directly from 1 BC to AD 1 because the traditional BC/AD calendar has no year zero.
1. The 2026 estimate starts with a missing year zero
The calculation starts with a common historical estimate: Jesus was born between 6 and 4 BC. Add the current year to the BC birth year, then subtract one. The calendar jumps straight from 1 BC to AD 1, so there is no year zero to count.
A birth in 4 BC gives 2026 + 4 - 1 = 2,029. A birth in 6 BC gives 2026 + 6 - 1 = 2,031. These are approximate year-based ages; an exact birthday would also depend on the day and month of his birth.
2. Jesus was probably born 'before Christ'
The Gospels do not name a calendar year for Jesus' birth. Matthew places it during the reign of Herod the Great, whose death is commonly dated to 4 BC. That means Jesus had to be born before the calendar system later labeled AD 1.1
Jesus being born 'before Christ' sounds like a calendar mistake because, in a sense, it is. The BC/AD system was devised centuries after his lifetime. Its starting point was meant to mark his birth, but the chronology was a few years off.
3. Luke gives us an 'about thirty' clue
Luke 3:23 says Jesus was 'about thirty years old' when he began his ministry. Luke also places John the Baptist's ministry in the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar, providing a first-century historical anchor.2
Luke's wording fits a ministry beginning in the late AD 20s and a birth several years before AD 1. That little word 'about' leaves room for the uncertainty in the dates.
Age thirty may carry another layer of meaning. Scholar David H. Wenkel explores a possible connection to priestly service, alongside the historical question of Jesus' age.3
4. The familiar age of 33 comes from a timeline
Jesus is traditionally said to have died at about 33. That familiar number combines Luke's statement that he was about thirty when his ministry began with a public ministry often estimated at roughly three years.
The Gospels never state his age at crucifixion. The birth date, the length of his ministry, and the proposed crucifixion dates of AD 30 or 33 produce different estimates. That is how 'about 33' became the familiar shorthand.
5. Christians believe Jesus is alive forever
For Christians, the story continues beyond the crucifixion: Jesus rose bodily from the dead and remains alive. Revelation 1:18 presents him as the one who was dead and is now alive forever. That encounter opens the book; our chapter-by-chapter guide to Revelation follows what comes next.
Christians also confess Jesus as the eternal Son who existed before his human birth. John 1 describes the Word as existing 'in the beginning' and becoming flesh. In that theological sense, Jesus did not begin to exist in 6 or 4 BC.
Counting from Bethlehem gives the roughly 2,029-to-2,031-year estimate for 2026. Christian belief in the eternal Son reaches back beyond Bethlehem, while the resurrection points forward to life without end.
6. December 25 gives us a celebration date
Christmas gives Christians a date to celebrate Jesus' birth, but the Gospels never supply his birthday. December 25 is the traditional date of the Nativity celebration.
That is why the answer stays a range even with the calendar math worked out. We have a first-century life, historical clues, and a worldwide birthday celebration, but no recorded day and year of birth.
Frequently asked questions
How old would Jesus be today in 2026?
Jesus would be approximately 2,029 to 2,031 years old in 2026 if his age were counted continuously from an estimated birth between 6 and 4 BC. The range exists because his exact birth year and birthday are unknown.
Why is Jesus not exactly 2,026 years old?
Most historians place Jesus' birth several years before AD 1, and the traditional BC/AD calendar has no year zero. A 4 BC birth produces an approximate age of 2,029 in 2026.
How old was Jesus when he died?
Jesus is traditionally said to have been about 33 when he died. Luke says he was about thirty when his ministry began, and the ministry is often estimated at roughly three years, but the Gospels do not state his exact age at crucifixion.
Was Jesus born on December 25?
The Gospels do not provide Jesus' calendar birthday. December 25 is the traditional Christian date for celebrating the Nativity, not a historically documented birth date.
Does Christianity teach that Jesus is still alive?
Yes. Historic Christianity teaches that Jesus rose from the dead and remains alive eternally. That belief is why Christians distinguish a hypothetical chronological age from the risen Christ's eternal life.
Is Jesus the same age as God?
Christian doctrine identifies Jesus as the eternal Son, not a created being who began to exist at Bethlehem. His human life has a historical chronology, while his divine identity is understood as eternal.
